The Board Blog: CSB's Buildings and Grounds Committee

In this week's Board Blog, CSB Trustee Thayer Hopkins explains the inner workings of our Buildings and Grounds Committee.
The Buildings and Grounds Committee at Cathedral School for Boys is responsible for assessing the physical facilities of the campus and providing oversight for specific building projects. In the past, the Committee also has provided leadership for large capital campaign projects that have significantly expanded and improved the infrastructure of the School. The Committee is comprised of eight people representing various constituencies of our community. These members include:

Chris Nooney, Board Chair
Burns Jones, Headmaster
Pierre Jospe, Business Manager
Marc Miller, Trustee and Head of Alumni Association
Kate Hanson, Trustee and Parents Association representative
David Thier, Lifetime Trustee and Development representative
Greg Sondern, Grace Cathedral representative
Thayer Hopkins, Trustee

We also frequently involve other CSB community members when specific issues arise such as those faculty members involved in the Project-based learning space last summer. The Committee typically meets every month during the school year, and in advance of the full Board meeting.

Each school year we establish goals, some of which are long-term projects. This year’s top priorities include:

Seismic Engineering Study – A study that assesses the various buildings on the campus for seismic safety, and addresses the requirements of a recent San Francisco city-wide ordinance for private K-12 schools.
Graphic Mapping and Inventory Project – A project aimed at developing scaled plans of the entire campus, which include data on predictable quantitative projections of maintenance and replacement costs over time.
Sustainability Assessment – An ongoing assessment of sustainability that includes the evolution of environmental and green practices at the School. This assessment, in particular, may also provide potential learning opportunities within the School’s curriculum.

Additionally the Buildings and Grounds Committee oversees one major construction project each summer. Our recent summer projects have included:

2013:  Theater/music multipurpose room makeover
2014:  Rain Catchment project
2015:  Hawk's Nest makerspace

We are currently in the process of planning classroom technology and corridor renovations for the summer of 2016. Plant Construction Company is working with the committee on pricing options before finalizing a scope of work.

If you have any questions regarding the Buildings and Grounds Committee, please contact Thayer Hopkins.
