Upper School Curriculum
Our Humanities program integrates English, history and religious studies. Content and skills grow out this connected curriculum, helping students to make logical connections and see the human experience through different lenses. In the seventh and eighth grades, all students study Latin, which introduces them to an ancient language, builds a foundation for the study of romance languages, and further supports the humanities curriculum, by providing additional culture, grammar and syntax.
Visual, Music and Digital Arts each approach their area of study with hands-on learning. Arts instruction is based on the premise that creative ability can be learned by all boys, not only those who are perceived to be artistically talented. In addition to addressing content within their curricula (e.g. ceramics, composition, animation), these courses also serve to support learning and expression in other academic courses.
Math and Science
Life science, physical science, earth and space science, and human physiology are presented in science classes, with an emphasis on observation, measurement, hypothesis, experimentation, and communication. Selected topics include electricity, light, the human body, chemical reactions, nuclear reactions, and conservation. Mathematics instruction stresses logical thinking, problem solving, and applications in the real world, such as financial analysis or devising ways to measure the buildings on Nob Hill.
Modern Languages
Spanish and Mandarin classes not only develop students' abilities to speak and write in the instructed language but to contrast and assess cultural differences, in order to improve their global literacy. In addition to use of local resources, Modern Language classes travel to countries such as China and Chile to enhance their learning.
Physical Education
The PE curriculum fosters physical and mental conditioning, development of fine motor skills, the enjoyment of sports and exercise, and a cooperative spirit. Beyond the physical education curriculum, after-school programs in soccer, basketball, and baseball are available. These extracurricular sports involve independent school leagues and other teams. The Upper School physical education program fosters cooperation and helps students understand the importance of working toward a common goal.
