The Board Blog: Committee on Trustees

In this month's Board Blog, Committee on Trustees Co-Chairs June Sakamoto and Kate Hanson discuss the committee's purpose and pursuits.

The Committee on Trustees (COT) is one of seven standing committees of the Board of Trustees. COT is primarily responsible for selecting candidates for openings on the Board to be presented to the full Board for approval prior to the end of each school year, overseeing ongoing education and professional development of all Trustees, and overseeing the Headmaster and Board of Trustee evaluation process.

The Board is composed of a maximum of 30 individuals, including the President of the Parents Association and the President of the Alumni Advisory Council. Trustees are responsible for formulating policy in furtherance of the Mission of the School and to ensure the financial stability of the School. Our goal is to have a Board that reflects our community in all its diversity (professional background, socio-economic, culture, national origin, faith tradition, gender, ethnicity, race, age, sexual orientation, and education), as well as members who are competent in areas needed to ensure the long-term health and stability of the School. We strive to include current CSB parents, alumni, former faculty/administration, parents of alumni, members of the Grace Cathedral Board, and members of the broader community in our Board membership.

We begin our selection process in the early fall by reviewing the composition of our current Board membership, with a focus on the characteristics and strengths that will need to be replaced or supplemented as Trustees complete their six-year commitments to the Board. Concurrently, and throughout the year, we solicit nominations from current trustees, current parents, alumni, friends of the School, the community at large, and self-nominations. We look at areas of expertise and talents that match the needs of the School's strategic plan, as well as the necessary expertise for the day-to-day work of the Board, while still reflecting the School's diverse constituencies.

This year, COT has created a one-page, two-sided Prospective Trustee Referral sheet to aid in the process of soliciting nominations. The front side is intended to give us some basic information about the referred trustee, and the back side of the sheet contains some FAQs about the Board of Trustees, the selection process, and some of the key elements that we are looking for in a Trustee. We encourage you all to nominate community members who you believe will work to continue to support and better our Cathedral School for Boys. And, of course, self-nominations are also welcome.

We are expecting to fill two openings for the 2017-18 academic year and five openings for the 2018-19 academic year.
