RED&GOLD Goes Green-er for Earth Day

From tips on recycling textiles to celebrating the Earth at chapel, this week's RED&GOLD Goes Green highlights the many ways CSB boys will honor Earth Day (April 22).

In the spirit of CSB's current textile drive and Earth Day, Milo Wetherall, Green Team member, and sustainability representative for Student Council give us the "411" on textile recycling.

Each year 19,000 tons of textile material heads to San Francisco's landfill. To help reduce this amount of waste, San Francisco has come up with a plan to recycle textiles. In schools across the city, beige-colored recycling bins have been placed in hallways for textile collection. Donated textiles may be stained or soiled, but should not be overly so. Collected clothing that is still wearable will be sent to Goodwill. Unusable textiles are shredded and repurposed into housing insulation and other useful products.

However, textile recycling isn't the only way to go green at CSB. Here are a few more ways our boys will be honoring Earth Day this week.

Making a pledge
Boys will pledge their allegiance to the Earth in the fourth-floor hallway.
In each Lower School science class, the boys will be challenged to think about what they want the earth to look like when their grandchildren "inherit the earth." Visit the hallway to learn more about what our boys find to be important!

Heading to Chapel
Boys will celebrate Earth Day with a focus on the stewardship of God's creation in Lower School Chapel on April 20. This chapel will be led by members of the Green Team and Ms. Banks. All are welcome.

Planting something green
Boys will be planting new plants in the rooftop garden. Each Lower School class will spend time in the garden, observing the plants, caring for existing plants, and choosing a seed (carrots, radishes, or lettuce) to plant and harvest before the year ends.

Composting
Boys will continue to conduct classroom composting. CSB second-graders will visit classes to educate the student body on the importance of composting. CSB's composting program supports the city of San Francisco's Zero Waste by 2020 initiative. To learn more about this endeavor, click here.
