Tuition

Cathedral School for Boys’ tuition is intentionally inclusive of the school expenses a family will incur over the course of the academic year. From lunch and snacks to all books, some school supplies, materials, athletics, technology fees, field trips, outdoor education trips, and international travel, Cathedral covers all of them in our tuition. However, families are asked to buy their son’s uniform separates and can buy next-to-new pieces at discounted prices through the School’s Uniform Closet.

For the 2023-24 school year, tuition is $42,500 for Lower School and $44,000 for Upper School.

Adjustable Tuition

When a school commits to attracting and retaining a socioeconomically diverse student body, everyone in the community benefits—academic discussions are more interesting, personal relationships are more enriching, and our awareness and understanding of and for each other is deepened. Cathedral School for Boys has no maximum limits on financial aid awards, and considers expenses such as transportation, uniforms, student travel, even in-home wifi access when calculating Adjustable Tuition awards.

The School maintains an Adjustable Tuition program for approximately 24% of the student body. The School provides $1.8M in tuition assistance based on a sliding-scale. Additional funds are available for extracurriculars, uniform costs, school trips, school supplies, and other incidentals that students may incur. If you are considering Cathedral for your son, please do not hesitate to apply because you think that your family cannot afford it.

    Applying for Adjustable Tuition

Adjustable Tuition is offered to students based on proven need and available school funds. Cathedral seeks to enroll academically qualified students independent of their financial circumstances. To determine the fairest and most equitable estimate of a family’s need, the school uses the general principles and analysis system of the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, NJ. The SSS has created two flyers, How to Apply For Adjustable Tuition(English) or Cómo Solicitar Ayuda Financiera (Español) that you may find useful. They offer additional resources on the SSS website.

Parents submit a confidential Parents’ Financial Statement directly to SSS, which processes the form and sends it to Cathedral School. The school requires that parents submit a copy of their most recent Federal Income Tax Forms 1040 and all necessary schedules to SSS. Both parents are expected to contribute to their son’s educational expenses. Every family must file an updated Parents’ Financial Statement for each year in which they wish to apply for Adjustable Tuition. All financial information submitted is held in strictest confidence.

Parents that are applying for Adjustable Tuition and may be considered "low-income" by San Francisco standards, are encouraged to also apply for scholarships available from The Basic Fund for up to $2500. The Basic Fund Scholarships help further close the gap to fund an independent school education. The Basic Fund begins accepting applications in January on a rolling basis, so we encourage you to apply early. For more information, please go to basicfund.org. José Zamora or Tara Boland are also happy to assist you with this.

The Community Scholars Program

Cathedral School for Boys invites qualified boys to apply to our Community Scholars Program, a comprehensive scholarship for high-achieving boys from underrepresented backgrounds, entering the 5th or 6th grade. With this program, Cathedral continues to strive to live our School Mission more fully to "attract a diverse student body of strong academic potential." We look forward to welcoming students into the community for whom an independent school education might not have otherwise been possible.
