Raising Boys

Athletics

Cathedral School for Boys Athletics values the development of an active body through physical expression and the belief that exercise facilitates personal and intellectual growth. This program is designed to focus on the process of physical activity and athletic achievement, with the intent of encouraging all athletes to strive for their maximum potential as individuals and team members.
At Cathedral, we view practices and games as an opportunity for student-athletes to demonstrate their abilities, always try their best, never give up, and have fun while participating competitively. It is our expectation that all Cathedral teams and individual members will demonstrate an understanding of competitive excellence, sportsmanship, character, respect, accountability, dedication, teamwork, and cooperation. Continuing to strive for these attributes will provide each student-athlete with a positive experience that is both challenging and rewarding.
"In the 2018-2019 academic year, we hosted 27 athletic teams. Over the course of the 2018-2019 academic year, 95.4% of our Upper School students participated in at least one sport while 74% of our students participated in multiple sports."

  • Our Mission

Cathedral School for Boys Athletics provides an environment that nurtures the holistic development of boys. We encourage growth in mind, in body, and in spirit. The guiding principle is our belief in the value of athletics as an educational tool. Our interscholastic Athletics program is an integral component in offering an excellent education for boys. Our Athletics program complements our academic curriculum and serves as a teaching tool to educate and instill valuable life lessons, such as responsibility, teamwork, competition, sportsmanship, work ethic, commitment, discipline, and leadership in our students.
  • Our Vision

Cathedral School for Boys Athletics uses a holistic approach to transform lives by instilling and developing character values that prepare boys to lead socially responsible lives.

Student-athletes will benefit from participating in the program in a number of different ways. Boys will live active and healthy lives, furthering their physical, socio-emotional, and cognitive skills. By committing to our interscholastic athletic teams, boys will grow high character value skills that are transferable to life beyond sports. Participants will learn how to adopt and apply a growth mindset through learning how to compete and how to deal with adversity.

Cathedral School for Boys community ties will strengthen as boys work together to pursue a common goal with classmates, coaches, and staff. As coaches, we aim to build strong interpersonal relationships to best support the boys in their endeavors both in sports and in life. Additionally, family support for the Athletics program will serve as a way for families to be involved with their children’s lives, and to be a part of the larger school community.
  • Our Coaching Philosophy

The coach is a teacher first, and the court / field is their classroom. Cathedral School for Boys’ Athletics seeks to develop all student-athletes at their appropriate level. To meet this expectation, coaches will challenge student-athletes and provide positive reinforcement and developmentally appropriate accountability. Coaches at Cathedral strive to:

    • Lead by Example
    • Communicate With Clarity
    • Demonstrate Enthusiasm
    • Develop the Athletic Ability of All Student-Athletes

  • Go Hawks!

A Brief History of an Incredible Mascot:

The first mascot of Cathedral School for Boys was a Crusader. Dressed in full armor and wielding a sword, this character became the face of the School’s sports teams and lent its name to the School's annual yearbook. After 40 years of service, the mascot was retired in the mid-1990s.

In 2003, in tandem with a gym remodel, the student body held a competition to create a new school mascot. After much deliberation and many rounds of voting, the students selected the “Hawks” as Cathedral School's new mascot, named after the birds that soar above Grace Cathedral.

In 2017, in commemoration of Cathedral School’s 60th Anniversary, the hawk mascot received a design refresh and an official name, "Forbes," in honor of the School’s founding headmaster, The Rev. Canon David R. Forbes.
