Pride Month 2020

A letter from Aaron Mullen, Director of Inclusion & Student Life, about Pride!
Dear Cathedral Community,

Over the last 50 years, San Francisco has been instrumental in creating the largest national gathering to celebrate the LGBTQ community. SF Pride is a weekend-long festival that recognizes the impact LGBTQ individuals, advocates, and allies have had in demanding equal rights. June was chosen for LGBTQ Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBTQ community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969.

Due to the global pandemic, the look of Pride weekend will be different this year - we will all miss the celebratory experiences of city streets laced with rainbow flags, colorful floats with expressive dancers, joyful music, and liberated cheers and whistles from diverse participants. In the absence of the 50th SF Pride Parade and accompanying festivities, we all  have the opportunity to bring the spirit of those festivities into our homes. I encourage you to talk to your friends and family about ways to celebrate the LGBTQ community, appreciate LGBTQ history, identify pivotal changemakers, explore the impact of the 14th Amendment, and discuss the most recent Supreme Court ruling.

If you are disappointed not to celebrate Pride Month in the large, public gatherings that have come to represent pride, remember you are not alone in the fight for equal rights and in the celebration of this community. You are a member of the Cathedral School family. Together, we denounce acts of discrimination and violence on the basis of gender and sexual orientation, and we celebrate all of the many ways that we identify. We are all in this together.

Be brave and spread the love,

Director of Inclusion & Student Life
